India Launches First Green Methanol Bunkering Facility

India has initiated its first Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling Facility at VOC Port, Tuticorin, marking a major step in sustainable maritime infrastructure. The foundation ceremony was held on 11 September 2025, led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Developed by Pune-based SOPAN Group in collaboration with VOC Port Authority (VOCPA), the pilot project includes a 750 m³ storage and bunkering terminal and complete plant infrastructure, executed under a comprehensive EPC model.
VOCPA Chairperson Susanta Purohit said the initiative aligns with India’s Net Zero by 2070 vision and reflects the port’s commitment to sustainable operations and global standards. SOPAN Director Aniruddha Kadvekar added that the facility could reduce ship CO₂ emissions by up to 95 per cent and positions India as a leader in the alternative fuel market.
The project supports Maritime India Vision 2030, promoting clean fuels and decarbonising the country’s ports while strengthening India’s green shipping ecosystem.
