VOC Port Hosts Pre-Event on AI in Ports and Maritime Operations

The V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu hosted a high-level pre-event to the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026 on nine February 2026. The gathering brought together senior policymakers, port authorities, technology leaders and academic experts to examine practical and policy dimensions of artificial intelligence within the maritime ecosystem. Organisers said the programme was intended to move discussion beyond concept towards deployment led innovation grounded in real port operations and to inform national port modernisation strategies.

Opening remarks from senior ministry officials underscored the strategic importance of AI for efficiency, safety and competitiveness across Indian ports and for advancing innovation led and sustainable port infrastructure. The inauguration combined traditional ceremonial elements with a practice focused agenda and featured senior port leaders, advisors and representatives from technology firms and public enterprises. Speakers outlined priorities for pilot deployments, system integration with legacy infrastructure and governance frameworks to ensure accountability in AI assisted decision making.

A defining highlight was a live demonstration of operational AI use cases at the port, which provided delegates with insight into applied AI within active berth and yard environments. The session on AI in Policy and Practice featured presentations by the VOC Port, CoRover AI, RailTel, Central Electronics Limited and Grant Thornton that addressed decision support systems, IoT monitoring and conversational AI platforms. Deliberations examined measurable operational outcomes, security technologies and the challenges of integrating new AI systems with existing port processes while preserving safety and resilience.

A further session on the future of maritime technology discussed digital twins, AI powered sensors, blockchain enabled systems and automated berth optimisation alongside regulatory choices shaping next generation port infrastructure. The closing discussion addressed human AI synergy, workforce preparedness and reskilling strategies and reaffirmed the continuing importance of human oversight for data quality and operational safety. Organisers confirmed that VOC Port will serve as a testbed for human centric AI adoption and that a panel on AI powered ports will be held at the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026 on February 17 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
