Foundation stone laid for new Meghalaya House in Navi Mumbai

The Governments of Meghalaya and Maharashtra have laid the foundation stone for a new Meghalaya House at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, following the handover of land by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

The foundation stone was jointly laid by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The new facility is aimed at expanding Meghalaya's institutional presence in Mumbai and improving accommodation for citizens visiting the city for medical treatment, education, official work, business and tourism.

The project comes in response to rising demand at the existing Meghalaya House in Vashi, which has been operational since 2008 with a capacity of just 12 rooms. The new campus will significantly increase accommodation capacity, particularly for patients and attendants visiting Tata Memorial Hospital, while also serving students, government officials, entrepreneurs, sportspersons and tourists.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the project was a significant milestone for the state and thanked the Maharashtra Government, CIDCO and other stakeholders for facilitating the initiative. He noted that the facility would strengthen ties between the two states while providing better support for Meghalaya residents visiting Mumbai.

Fadnavis highlighted the longstanding cultural and people-to-people ties between Maharashtra and Meghalaya, noting the contribution of people from the northeastern state in education, healthcare, music and other sectors. He said the new Meghalaya House, to be built on a 2,071.67 sq m site, would further strengthen relations between the two states.

The ceremony also featured a cultural performance by the Khmih Creative Society under the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme (CM MGMP), showcasing Meghalaya's cultural heritage.
