Kochi Installs Rs 300 Million Smart LED Streetlights

In a major step towards improving Kochi’s infrastructure and enhancing urban living standards, Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) has completed the installation of high-tech, energy-efficient LED streetlights across the city. The project will be officially commissioned by Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) Minister M.B. Rajesh on Wednesday.
According to Mayor M. Anilkumar, the Kochi Corporation has replaced over 40,000 outdated streetlights across its 74 divisions with new, energy-efficient LED systems. The initiative forms part of the Smart Cities Mission, and the project has been completed at a cost of approximately Rs 300 million.
“This city-wide LED lighting project marks the realisation of a long-cherished dream of the Kochi Corporation,” said the Mayor. “The operation of these lights is managed through a centralised control system comprising more than 1,500 automated panels, ensuring better efficiency and maintenance.”
The project aims to make Kochi brighter, safer, and more sustainable, while significantly reducing the electricity expenditure of the civic body. It also aligns with CSML’s broader goal of smart urban transformation, combining energy efficiency with digital monitoring.
Initially announced in 2023, the project began with a pilot phase in five locations — Vyttila, Cochin Shipyard Road, MG Road, Venduruthy Bridge, and South Overbridge. During this phase, CSML introduced smart meters and connected the lights to the Integrated Command, Control and Communication Centre (IC4) for real-time monitoring. The IC4 system enables the replacement of malfunctioning lights within 48 hours, improving reliability and response time.
The Mayor added that these efforts symbolise Kochi’s transformation into a model smart city, integrating modern technology, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
