Smart Cities Mission Nears Completion in Jammu and Srinagar

The Union Government has informed Parliament that Jammu and Srinagar have reached the final stretch of the Smart Cities Mission, with 282 of the 288 projects approved for the two cities completed by March 31, 2026. The ministry reported that this represents 98 per cent of the sanctioned works under the programme. The progress reflects sustained investment in urban mobility, public infrastructure, digital services and civic amenities across both cities.

The ministry said the 288 projects were approved at a total cost of Rs 66.03 billion (bn), with completed projects representing investment of Rs 64.72 bn and six projects currently under implementation. Financial data supplied to the Rajya Sabha indicates that most sanctioned works have been delivered and that remaining works are at various stages of execution. Officials characterised the outcomes as material delivery on the mission's objectives.

City wise figures show Jammu Smart City has completed 125 out of 127 sanctioned projects, covering works worth Rs 29.40 bn against an approved value of Rs 29.69 bn, with only two projects remaining. Srinagar Smart City has completed 157 of its 161 sanctioned projects, with completed works valued at Rs 35.32 bn compared with a total sanctioned cost of Rs 36.34 bn and four projects still under execution. The deployments include transport system upgrades, improved public spaces and expanded digital governance services.

The parliamentary response also noted that no inquiry has been initiated into alleged financial irregularities or project mismanagement related to Smart City works in the two cities. The ministry stated that the mission has strengthened urban infrastructure and enhanced civic service delivery. With one of the country's flagship urban transformation programmes nearing completion, officials said the remaining work is expected to further improve urban mobility and lay foundations for more sustainable, technology enabled city management.
