BMC invites bids for constructing pumping station at Mahul

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the process of selecting an agency for the installation of the city’s eighth stormwater drain pumping station at Mahul.

The project cost will approximately be Rs 350 crore. On Thursday, the civic organisation invited bids for the design and development of the Mahul Pumping station. Recently, the Improvement Committee had sanctioned a bid for a land exchange between BMC and a private developer for the project.

The project had been pending for many years since the earlier site decided for the development of the pumping station was under the jurisdiction of the Salt Commissioner. Despite many requests, they had denied handing over the land.

The project is essential as the BMC expects that once the plants are installed, the flooding in places like Gandhi Market, Sion, Kings Circle, Kurla during the rainy season can be stopped. As per the proposal documents, the appointed contractor will have to design, build and maintain the plant.

In July, the BMC had already granted a contract for the construction of another pumping station in Mogra, Andheri. Six pumping stations have been built in the city to handle flooding so far.
