The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is planning to set up eight material recovery facilities (MRFs) with a combined processing capacity of 255 tonnes per day (t per day) at different locations across the city. The facilities are intended to segregate and recover recyclable material from collected waste and thereby reduce the volume sent to landfills. Proposed sites include Dwarka Sector 29, Zakhira, Hatsal, Chirag Delhi, Sangam Vihar, Bhalswa, Model Town and Ranikhera.\n\nOf these, the MRF at Dwarka Sector 29 with a capacity of 55 tonnes per day and the one at Zakhira with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day are under the approval stage, while the remaining six facilities with capacities ranging from 20 to 50 tonnes per day are at the planning stage. The civic body already operates five MRFs with a combined capacity of 22 tonnes per day. Those operational units are located at Geeta Colony, Patparganj Industrial Area, Dilshad Colony, Pushp Vihar and Raghubir Nagar.\n\nOfficials said that after the eight additional facilities are developed the combined processing capacity in the city under the MCD will be around 275 tonnes per day, which will be more than 10 times the current capacity. Beyond the infrastructure numbers, the proposed scaling up is intended to deliver a significant environmental and social transition for city residents and for informal waste pickers. The plan is presented as a measure to decentralise waste recovery and to build high capacity sorting hubs closer to communities.\n\nBy situating larger sorting hubs in neighbourhoods such as Dwarka, Sangam Vihar and Chirag Delhi, the civic body expects to reduce local dumping spots and to minimise open burning while integrating more sustainable recycling practices into urban routines. The MRFs will streamline segregation at source, improve the quantity and quality of recoverable recyclables and support more circular resource flows. Officials said the approach is aimed at embedding recycling into city management and reducing pressure on landfill sites.
