Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation Of 1,000 Dhanbad Residents

More than 1,000 residents in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district are being relocated to safer areas following reports of a “poisonous gas leak” from underground mines, officials said on Thursday. A woman allegedly died on Wednesday and 12 others fell ill after carbon monoxide leaked from mines in various parts of Kenduadih Basti, though officials noted that the woman’s exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the postmortem report.

Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) initiated the evacuation immediately after the incident, issuing notices instructing residents to vacate high-risk zones without delay. The company has also stationed three ambulances in the locality to respond to emergencies, according to G. C. Saha, General Manager of BCCL’s Putki-Balihati Colliery Area.

Saha said arrangements are being made to relocate all affected residents to safer locations. “For the safety of life and property, we have already requested them to leave the dangerous zone,” he added.
