The Ministry of Power released the draft National Electricity Data Sharing Framework, 2026 on June 22, 2026 and invited comments until July 21, 2026. The initiative seeks to create a more organised, transparent and efficient system for sharing electricity related data across India. The ministry said it would support policy making, research and market functioning. India's power sector generates large volumes of operational, commercial and consumer related information that is stored in disparate systems and formats and hinders reliable analysis. The draft proposes the National Electricity Data Centre (NEDC) and the National Electricity Data Portal (NEDP) as centralised platforms for standardised, machine readable datasets. Participation will be voluntary but the ministry said the platforms would enhance transparency and foster innovation. The framework will cover data from generating companies, transmission utilities, distribution companies, Load Despatch Centres and Electricity Regulatory Commissions while excluding information related to national security and critical infrastructure. Sensitive items such as cyber security protocols, real time strategic operational information, defence related electricity infrastructure and pre market bidding data will remain protected. A two tier system will classify datasets into publicly available and access controlled groups. Tier one will include installed generation capacity, monthly power generation figures and aggregated renewable statistics. Tier two will cover feeder level data, load flow cases and smart meter analytics with access restricted to registered Indian entities that complete KYC procedures and sign non disclosure agreements. To comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 the draft recommends anonymisation, pseudonymisation, tokenisation and spatial displacement to safeguard consumer privacy. The proposal suggests that participating organisations appoint a senior level Data Governance Officer to oversee classification, handle sharing requests and manage a two level digital grievance redressal process, with each level expected to be completed within 14 working days.
