Liebherr Launches New 50-Tonne Crawler Excavators
Liebherr has introduced three new crawler excavator models — R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8 — in the 50-tonne segment at steinexpo 2026. Designed for earthmoving, extraction and heavy-duty applications, the new machines combine robust construction, advanced technologies and improved operator comfort.The R 948 G8 has been developed for earthmoving applications, featuring an LC chassis, specialised equipment options and optimised motorisation for reduced fuel consumption without compromising performance. The R 952 G8 serves as the versatile model in the series, offering multiple chassis configurations, equipment options and increased engine power to support diverse operating conditions. The R 958 G8 has been designed for demanding mining applications with an S-HD chassis, mass excavation equipment and specialised configurations.Built for challenging environments, the new excavators feature reinforced structures made from high-strength steels and steel castings to improve durability and operational availability. The machines are designed for simplified maintenance with easy access platforms, secure service points and an automatic central lubrication system integrated into the human-machine interface.The excavators are equipped with Liebherr’s Positive Control hydraulic technology, enabling fast and precise movements. New assistance systems, including Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), help reduce fuel consumption by up to 10% while maintaining productivity. The Bucket Fill Assist system automates bucket-filling operations, while the Modetronic function adjusts machine parameters according to specific application requirements.The new models feature an integrated passive 2D control system developed with Leica Geosystems and a built-in dynamic weighing system. A 3D control solution is also available as an option, with semi-automated functions to further improve accuracy and productivity.The excavators are fitted with Liebherr’s latest emCAB operator cabin and INTUSI human-machine interface, offering improved ergonomics, intuitive controls and enhanced operator comfort. Electric joysticks provide precise machine control, helping operators maintain productivity during extended working cycles.Safety features include standard camera assistance systems to improve visibility around the machine. Optional Skyview 360° provides a complete bird’s-eye view of the operating area, while improved access platforms and optimised fluid-level visibility enhance safety during daily operations.With the introduction of the R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8, Liebherr has expanded its crawler excavator portfolio with machines designed to deliver performance, reliability and adaptability across construction and mining applications.
