Powergrid Clears Rs 7.1 Billion Projects for Grid Resilience

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Powergrid) has approved two major infrastructure projects worth Rs 7.1 billion to strengthen national grid operations and enhance disaster preparedness. The company’s Committee of Directors on Investment on Projects cleared the initiatives at its meeting on 26 September.
The first project, valued at Rs 2.1 billion, will set up a Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) communication system across all five regional grids — Northern, North Eastern, Southern, Western and Eastern. Scheduled for commissioning by 23 August 2026, it will enhance coordination and efficiency in power transmission management.
The second project, costing Rs 5 billion, involves procuring 20 sets (300 towers) of Emergency Restoration System (ERS) under the Make in India programme. Slated for commissioning by 19 April 2027, the ERS will enable rapid restoration of transmission lines during natural disasters or infrastructure failures, bolstering the country’s power supply resilience.
Powergrid said these investments are aligned with India’s objective of modernising power infrastructure, improving reliability, and supporting domestic manufacturing. The approvals highlight the company’s proactive approach to tackling evolving energy security challenges and maintaining a robust national grid.
