RIR Power Unveils Indigenous 25 kV Thyristor Switch

RIR Power Electronics Limited has announced the successful development of a cutting-edge 25 kilovolt (kV) – 120 kiloampere (kA) capacitor discharge vertically integrated semiconductor switch, marking a milestone in India’s high-power electronics capability. The device was described as the country’s first indigenously developed 25 kV high-voltage thyristor switch designed for advanced pulse power applications. The company said the innovation will strengthen domestic manufacturing expertise and reduce reliance on imports. The development is expected to meet growing domestic demand for specialised pulse power systems.

At the core of the system is a 125 millimetre silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) capable of blocking voltages up to eight kV, developed in India for the first time. Multiple SCR units are integrated in a series configuration to achieve the required high-voltage performance and to enable precise control over extremely high current pulses. The switch is configured for capacitor discharge operation to deliver controlled, high-energy pulses for specialised systems. Design priorities included reliability and precise timing control to suit critical deployments.

The product has been rigorously tested and qualified at the high-voltage laboratory within RIR Power’s manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat, demonstrating robust performance and reliability under demanding conditions. The company indicated that the development enhances supply chain resilience and advances the domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Intended applications include defence systems requiring controlled high-current pulses, advanced medical equipment and precision directed energy technologies.

RIR Power said the milestone supports the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives and will enhance the company’s global competitiveness in high-power semiconductor solutions. The company pointed to decades of expertise in high-power semiconductors and a focus on technology and efficiency as the foundation for the achievement. The announcement included contact details for media relations and noted the company’s listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange. The firm also highlighted aftermarket support and quality assurance processes.
