Tripura Plans 185 MW River Power Using Hydrokinetic Tech

The Tripura government has identified 10 river sites to generate 185 MW of electricity using hydrokinetic turbine technology, as part of a broader push to expand renewable energy and ensure round-the-clock power supply.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the plan on January 3 while addressing the bhoomi pujan ceremony of the Super ECBC building in Agartala. He said the initiative aims to harness the kinetic energy of flowing rivers to meet rising electricity demand in the state.

According to the minister, the number of power consumers in Tripura has increased from about 0.721 million before 2018 to around 1.057 million at present. The state currently supplies electricity for nearly 24 hours a day, with peak demand at 378 MW, which is projected to rise to 650 MW by 2031.

The identified river locations include Chakmaghat, Maharani, Dumboor and Feni, with preparatory work expected to begin next month. Hydrokinetic technology allows power generation without large dams, making it suitable for regions with flowing rivers and limited head height.

Nath also highlighted the state’s solar energy initiatives under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, along with rooftop solar installations on government buildings. He said the focus is on adopting new technologies, reducing dependence on depleting gas resources and ensuring long-term, sustainable electricity generation for Tripura.
