BMC to form town planning department

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is preparing the development plan for 2014-2034, plans to set up a town planning department to consult on development issues.

The proposed town planning department, which is expected to be formed by the first week of June, will have qualified and expert urban planners.

The department would have a significant role in the city’s infrastructure developments -- the use of open spaces, introduction of new fire services, hospitals and health services. It will be a single planning authority for all new roads, the proposed coastal road and other new proposals.

The 12th Schedule of the Constitution of India gives the responsibility of urban planning, including town planning to the municipal corporation.

So far, civic engineers were doing the work of town planning. The town planning department, headed by a deputy municipal commissioner, will have two chief planners — town planning and strategic planning.

It will also have deputy chief planners from the fields such as environmental planning, mobility planning and housing sector planning.
