GM Inspects Katra-Baramulla Line, Flags Deadlines And Safety Compliance

General Manager of Northern Railway (GM) conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Katra-Baramulla line to review construction progress and to flag adherence to deadlines and safety compliance. The inspection encompassed civil works, tunnels, bridges, track laying and station readiness, and the GM emphasised the need for coordinated action among contractors and departmental units. The visit underscored the requirement for strict monitoring of timelines and for remedial measures where progress lagged. The GM called for enhanced supervision and clearer milestone tracking.

During the visit the GM examined the status of electrification, signalling and telecommunication systems and sought detailed updates on testing schedules and certification processes. Project officials were instructed to expedite pending works and to submit regular progress reports to divisional and zonal headquarters. The GM made it clear that timelines must be met and that accountability would be enforced through scheduled reviews. He also emphasised coordination between technical and administrative teams to avoid bottlenecks.

Safety compliance formed a core focus of the inspection and included checks on track geometry, drainage, fencing, level crossings and staff training programmes. The GM directed immediate implementation of corrective actions for identified deficiencies and ordered intensified quality assurance and third party audits. Testing and certification of signalling equipment and provision of emergency response arrangements were highlighted as prerequisites for commissioning. Inventory checks for critical spares and materials were to be carried out without delay.

Leadership in Northern Railway will hold periodic review meetings and will coordinate with local administrations to reduce public inconvenience and to ensure environmental safeguards are observed. Contractual mechanisms including liquidated damages may be invoked in cases of non compliance and project heads were asked to present timelines for completion. Follow up inspections were scheduled to verify corrective action and to ensure that passenger safety and operational reliability are prioritised ahead of service commencement.
