Patcher: A software tool for updating infrastructure as a code

Patcher, a tool to automatically keep infrastructure as a code updated even after breaking changes, was made available in beta.

Patcher, at the time of writing, enables upgrading the CIS AWS Foundation Benchmark reference architecture from version 1.4 to 1.5, bringing in over 200 modifications and addressing three broken changes. The Infrastructure as Code Library from Gruntwork may be assembled into an end-to-end tech stack on AWS using the recommendations and best practises in the reference architecture. With a series of tasks carried out automatically, Patcher aims to give customers the ability to handle all upgrades to the Gruntwork Infrastructure as a Code Library.

Patcher can be readily installed from the GitHub repository (at the time of writing, Gruntwork needs to be asked for access to the repository). Patcher leverages Docker to carry out updates in a secure setting.

Patcher follows these procedures to upgrade an IaC repository after installation:

  • Find out the dependency's updates
  • Fix up any errant modifications.
  • Review and implement the changes
  • Deploy
