ROHM, Tata Electronics Partner For Chip Manufacturing In India

Japan’s ROHM and Tata Electronics have entered into a strategic partnership to manufacture semiconductors in India for both domestic and international markets, strengthening collaboration between the Japanese and Indian chip ecosystems.

Under the partnership, the two companies will establish a manufacturing framework for power semiconductors in India, combining ROHM’s device design and technology expertise with Tata Electronics’ assembly and testing capabilities. By leveraging their respective sales networks, the companies aim to expand customer reach in India and deliver enhanced technology solutions globally.

As an initial step, Tata Electronics will assemble and test an automotive power-saving semiconductor component designed by ROHM in India. The product, intended for use in vehicles, is expected to be shipped to customers from next year. The partners also plan to collaborate on advanced packaging technologies in subsequent phases.

The collaboration aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” vision, with a focus on designing and manufacturing products within the country. By building an integrated ecosystem covering both design and production, the companies aim to ensure a stable and resilient supply of semiconductors for India’s growing electronics demand.

Kazuhide Ino, Member of the Board and Managing Executive Officer at ROHM, said the partnership would help expand the company’s range of semiconductor products manufactured in India and support the development of a sustainable, region-based supply chain. He added that the collaboration would cater to rising demand from Indian customers while also enabling exports to global markets.

Randhir Thakur, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, said the company is committed to building a strong semiconductor ecosystem in India. He said Tata Electronics’ assembly and test facilities would support ROHM in developing products for Indian and global customers, while also enhancing trust and resilience in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Tata Electronics is currently developing India’s first large-scale semiconductor fabrication facility in Gujarat, along with an assembly and testing plant in Assam. These facilities are expected to support multiple sectors, including consumer electronics, automotive and defence manufacturing.
