Delhi Partners With Private Firms to Create Green Zones Under Flyovers

The Delhi government has signed a memorandum of understanding with private organisations to develop green zones beneath the city’s flyovers, aiming to transform neglected underpasses into usable urban spaces. The Public Works Department has partnered with Dalmia Bharat Limited, Godrej Industries Group and the EaseMyTrip Foundation under corporate social responsibility to execute the projects. The move was presented as part of a wider effort to accelerate public welfare projects and enhance urban infrastructure. The government indicated that close cooperation with the private sector is central to the delivery model.

Revamp work will include landscaped green areas, wall murals, improved sanitation systems, seating arrangements and facilities for indoor and outdoor recreation. At Mangi Setu a large Ramayana-themed visual journey will be showcased through murals to create a cultural landmark beneath the flyover. The projects are designed to provide play areas, civic amenities and maintenance arrangements that encourage daily public use. Authorities stated that the enhancements aim to combine aesthetics with functionality to make the spaces recognisable and safe.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the participating organisations and conveyed that such public private collaborations would help transform the capital into a modern, clean and attractive city. The initiative was presented as promoting greater public awareness and participation in maintaining cleanliness and civic order. The Public Works Department envisaged that improved lighting, seating and active uses would deter anti-social behaviour and increase legitimate occupancy. Officials indicated that successful projects could serve as templates for similar interventions elsewhere in the city.

The memorandum of understanding is expected to guide phased implementation and define roles for maintenance and monitoring under the corporate social responsibility arrangements. Project partners are to support landscaping, mural creation, sanitation upgrades and provision of furniture and play equipment while municipal agencies retain responsibility for long term upkeep. Officials projected that the transformed spaces will offer safer pedestrian circulation, informal recreation and visually coherent public realms that reflect local culture. Observers suggested that careful maintenance plans and community engagement will be critical to sustain the benefits.
