Hindustan Zinc Partners with BecomingX for the World’s Deepest Marathon

Hindustan Zinc the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and one of the top five global silver producers, has announced its partnership with BecomingX for the World’s Deepest Marathon, an unprecedented endurance event set 1,120 metres below the Earth’s surface at Boliden’s Garpenberg zinc mine in Sweden.

Taking place on October 25, the marathon will feature 60 runners from 18 countries — including CEOs, mining leaders, charity workers, and first-time marathoners — all uniting to raise $1 million for charity. Hindustan Zinc’s CEO, Arun Misra, and COO, Kishore S will represent the company in this record-breaking challenge.

“At Hindustan Zinc, we believe true strength lies in challenging limits — whether in human potential, safety excellence, or technological innovation,” said Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc. “The World’s Deepest Marathon embodies the perseverance and progress that define modern mining. I am thrilled to join my global peers in this extraordinary run — a symbol of unity, resilience, and our shared commitment to redefining the future of mining.”

Building on its strong focus on sports, fitness, and community well-being, Hindustan Zinc has previously hosted the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur, attracting over 7,000 participants under the #RunForZeroHunger initiative by the Anil Agarwal Foundation’s Nandghar project. The company also runs programs such as Zinc Football Academy, Zinc Football Girls Academy, and the AIFF Zinc Blue Cubs League, nurturing young sporting talent and promoting inclusion at the grassroots level.

The World’s Deepest Marathon — organized by BecomingX, ICMM, and Boliden — will also be an official Guinness World Record attempt for:
  • The Deepest Marathon (1,120m below sea level)
  • The Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team)

Paul Gurney, CEO, BecomingX, said, “The World’s Deepest Marathon is about more than running — it’s about proving what humans can achieve when we push beyond the ordinary, while showcasing the innovation and safety of modern mining.”

Rohitesh Dhawan, CEO, ICMM, added, “Running a full marathon in a working underground mine reflects the progress our industry has made in health, safety, and technology. It’s an inspiring way to highlight responsible mining in action.”

With this collaboration, Hindustan Zinc continues to champion global partnerships that celebrate endurance, sustainability, and innovation — both above and below the ground.

"Join industry leaders at RAHSTA Expo, India's premier platform for roads, highways and traffic infrastructure. Register now to explore innovations, network with experts and shape the future of mobility."
