MoSPI Releases SDG National Indicator Framework Progress Report 2025

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) updates and releases the Sustainable Development Goals National Indicator Framework (SDG-NIF) Progress Report annually on National Statistics Day, on 29 June. The SDG-NIF Progress Report, 2025 sets out 284 national indicators to monitor progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. The latest edition was released on 29 June 2025 and includes an executive summary with thematic highlights.

States and union territories are responsible for developing and updating their State Indicator Framework (SIF) to monitor subnational progress according to local priorities and data needs. The progress report incorporates data supplied by various line ministries and departments, including results from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).

The executive summary highlights advances under Goal one, No Poverty, with the proportion of the population living in poverty declining from 24.85 per cent in 2015–16 to 14.96 per cent in 2019–21 and coverage under social protection systems expanding from 22.0 per cent in 2016 to 64.3 per cent in 2025. These changes are cited as indicators of improved social protection and poverty reduction.

Under Goal five, Gender Equality, the female to male Labour Force Participation Rate ratio increased from 0.43 in 2020–21 to 0.54 in 2023–24, and exclusive women self?help groups (SHGs) in bank?linked SHGs rose from 88.92 per cent in 2015–16 to 97.04 per cent in 2023–24. The annexure lists indicators covering wages, employment composition, unemployment and the incidence of social security among regular employees, which inform gender and labour market analysis.

MoSPI has pursued institutional measures to ensure that India’s SDG reporting remains globally comparable and transparent, including a tripartite memorandum of understanding with NITI Aayog and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (UNRCO) to strengthen statistical monitoring and capacity development. The ministry established the Data for Development Coordination Forum (DDCF) on SDGs to support data plans, stakeholder reviews and coordinated discussions with central ministries and UN agencies. The report was presented in the Rajya Sabha and the complete document is available as Sustainable Development Goals National Indicator Framework Progress Report, 2025.pdf.
