Vedanta Aluminium Expands Jharsuguda Billet Capacity to 830 KTPA

Vedanta Aluminium has expanded its billet production capacity at its Jharsuguda operations in Odisha, taking total capacity to 830 KTPA and placing the facility among the largest aluminium billet manufacturing sites globally. The expansion strengthens the company’s ability to supply high-quality billets to customers worldwide, while reinforcing its leadership in India’s fast-growing extrusion and downstream sectors. The expansion adds 250 KTPA to the existing 580 KTPA billet infrastructure. Billets produced at Jharsuguda, available in diameters ranging from 5 to 12 inches, are key semifinished inputs for extrusion processes that support industries such as infrastructure, transportation, renewable energy, electrical systems, consumer goods and packaging. Aluminium billets also play a critical role in sustainable manufacturing owing to their recyclability, strength-to-weight advantages and versatility. The billet facility is equipped with advanced casting and homogenising technology from global suppliers Wagstaff and Hertwich. Vedanta Aluminium currently supplies over half of India’s domestic billet demand, further strengthening its market leadership through this expansion. In addition to billet capacity, a new 120 KTPA Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) facility has also been commissioned at Jharsuguda, enhancing the company’s value-added aluminium portfolio. Commenting on the milestone, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said the expansion supports the company’s vision of building a globally competitive and self-reliant aluminium manufacturing base for India, while strengthening the country’s position in the global aluminium value chain. C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said the scale-up reflects the site’s focus on speed, technical excellence and adherence to global standards, further positioning Jharsuguda as a world-class aluminium manufacturing hub. Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest producer of premium-grade aluminium billets for the global extrusion industry and the country’s first producer of low-carbon aluminium under its Restora range. With customers in over 60 countries, the company offers more than 25 billet variants and plans to expand aluminium capacity across Odisha and Chhattisgarh to 1.25 MTPA. Its Jharsuguda plant is also the first primary aluminium smelter in India to receive certifications from the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
