The Central government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway within the next two years, saying around 75-80 per cent of the corridor is already finished. The project is estimated at about Rs 1.1 trillion (tn) and spans around 1,350 kilometres. Officials advised that completion would allow road travel from Delhi to Nariman Point in Mumbai and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in about 12 hours, improving freight movement and industrial connectivity. During an inspection in Mandana and at Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve Tunnel, the Union minister approved several regional projects including a 10-kilometre four-lane Mukundara Bypass on the Kota-Jhalawar section at an estimated cost of Rs 5.51 billion (bn). Work on the bypass is expected to begin within the next three months. The minister also approved a 21-kilometre four-lane greenfield spur connecting Kota to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway via Alantpura at an estimated cost of Rs 10 billion (bn), with construction likely to commence within the same timeframe. In a major announcement the minister outlined plans for the Atal Express Highway connecting Kota and Etawah along the Chambal River, a project estimated at about Rs 150 billion (bn). The Detailed Project Report for the route is under preparation and construction will begin after planning is complete. Officials further noted that a DPR for a road linking Bhawani Mandi with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has been initiated following requests from local representatives. The minister highlighted the broader economic impact of enhanced road networks, noting that better highways attract industries, logistics parks, educational institutions, medical colleges and agro-based units and generate employment, particularly in underdeveloped tribal districts. He reported that nearly eight million (mn) t of municipal waste have been utilised in road construction nationwide and that bio-bitumen from crop residue and aviation fuel from stubble are being promoted to improve sustainability. The event in Kota was attended by the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajasthan chief minister and followed a progress inspection of the expressway corridor.
