The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning a Rs 23.95 billion (bn) cable-stayed flyover to link Madh Island and Versova in Mumbai's western suburbs. The civic body said the structure is intended to reduce commuting time to 10 minutes from the current 60 to 90 minutes for many travellers. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of the monsoon season with a target completion year of 2029. The project cost and timeline reflect the authority's intention to provide a direct road link over Malad Creek. At present there is no direct road link between the two localities and commuters must use a roundabout route of 18 to 20 km that can take 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. A jetty service operates for about eight months a year and is suspended during the monsoon, and its limited frequency has left many residents reliant on the longer road journey. The new flyover is expected to offer a permanent alternative to the seasonal water service. The proposed structure will be cable-stayed with four vehicular lanes and a wider carriageway to accommodate rising traffic density. The bridge will be two point zero six km long and 600 metres wide according to project documents, and preliminary work such as soil testing and a station survey has already begun. Major civil works will commence only after clearance from the Bombay High Court, with the last hearing held in July and a final hearing indicated for possible scheduling by September. The scheme was conceived in the civic development plan of 1967, was put on paper in 2015 and had its final blueprint approved in 2020, while work orders were issued in 2024. The BMC has emphasised that the alignment has been designed to minimise environmental damage and that the cable-stayed design will limit piling requirements. Officials expect the bridge to improve access to hospitals, schools and other essential services for island residents. If delivered as planned the project will materially alter commuting patterns across the western suburbs.
