The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun a traffic study to ease chronic gridlock at the Sarai Kale Khan loop in the national capital. The study will map vehicular movements and identify constraints that contribute to recurrent congestion at the interchange. Authorities intend the exercise to provide a technical basis for targeted infrastructural and operational measures. The scope includes an assessment of junction geometry, ramp layouts and signal timings along with the interaction between private vehicles, public transport and pedestrian flows. Outputs will include an action plan that sequences short term operational fixes and longer term engineering works. NHAI will use the study findings to prioritise measures aimed at reducing delay, improving safety and enhancing connectivity for buses and non?motorised users. The authority has signalled that any recommended designs will be coordinated with city agencies to align with broader mobility plans. Implementation will follow statutory approvals and detailed design work. The study will set quantitative benchmarks for delay reduction and establish monitoring protocols to measure traffic performance over time. It will identify short?term low?cost measures such as traffic management changes and signal retiming alongside proposals for structural interventions that require land acquisition and detailed design.
