PMC Starts Initial Steps for Shastrinagar Chowk Flyover

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced initial preparations for a 'Y' shaped flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk to alleviate traffic congestion on Ahmednagar Road, according to officials. They mentioned that the flyover is expected to address the traffic issues. The civic body intends to begin actual construction work on the flyover in September. Currently, consultants are engaged in planning, conducting traffic surveys, and performing soil testing as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

According to Abhijit Ambekar, executive engineer of the special projects department, the project had been originally planned four years ago, but due to changing circumstances, the consultant is now updating the old design of the flyover and grade separator.

Ambekar explained that previously, there was a need to widen the road because of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route lane. However, with the dismantling of the Ahmednagar Road BRT on this stretch, approximately 7 meters of land has become available for the flyover, eliminating the necessity for road widening.

He further stated that they are currently considering a Y-shaped flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk, with additional designs to be proposed by the consultant for PMC to finalize.

Initially, the plan for Shastrinagar Chowk included a flyover and subway to ease traffic flow, but the project required a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) due to the proximity of the historical Aga Khan Palace. On April 5, 2024, an audio-visual presentation was made to the National Monuments Authority in Delhi to secure the necessary approval. Subsequently, the NOC was granted by the central and state archaeology departments, clearing the way for the project to proceed.
