PMC To Complete 12 Missing Road Links In Pune Within A Year

Pune Municipal Corporation has set a target to complete 12 critical missing link road projects within a year to improve the city's road network and ease traffic congestion. The civic administration considers closing these long pending gaps essential to improving connectivity and reducing travel times across several busy parts of the city. The programme is part of a broader effort to bridge incomplete stretches identified in the city's Development Plan and Regional Plan surveys.

According to civic records, the city has 459 kilometres of missing road links across 678 locations, with 33 stretches identified as high priority and only five completed so far. The administration has finalised the next batch of priority corridors and plans to accelerate execution over the coming months, the municipal commissioner indicated. The selected links cover both the old city and rapidly developing suburban areas.

Projects slated for completion include the Baner–Pashan link road, the Aundh–Balewadi corridor via Jupiter Hospital and a service road connecting Navale Bridge with Wakad, along with other strategic stretches across the municipal area. The missing link programme follows a detailed survey conducted in 2022 that identified breaks forcing motorists onto longer and more congested routes. Eighteen road works are currently being delivered through a credit note mechanism that issues transferable development credits to private developers instead of cash payments.

Land acquisition remains a significant hurdle, with several private owners preferring cash compensation and delaying some projects as negotiations continue while the civic body faces financial constraints. Despite these challenges, the administration is optimistic that completing the priority stretches will remove bottlenecks and improve connectivity between growing residential and commercial neighbourhoods. The completed links are expected to complement other infrastructure works and reduce congestion across the city.
