Saibaba Flyover In Coimbatore Delayed, July Completion Target

The Saibaba Colony flyover in Coimbatore has been delayed again, and the state highways department now says completion is likely in July. Motorists and residents continue to face severe congestion along Mettupalayam Road as work on the busy junction remains incomplete. The repeated postponement has heightened frustration among commuters.

The Rs 750 million (Rs 750 mn) flyover stretches 975 metres from Alagesan Road to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Coimbatore head office near Eru Company junction and was launched on September 19, 2024. The project is one of the city's major infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing congestion at Saibaba Colony junction and is expected to significantly reduce travel time for motorists. Planners have described the structure as a key link to improve traffic flow on MTP Road.

Construction has encountered multiple obstacles that have slowed progress. Traffic diversion on one of the busiest national highways through the city proved challenging in the initial stages, and contractors also had to repair damaged underground drainage pipelines and shift high tension electric cables and electricity board towers. Ramp construction works near the Eru Company junction remain pending, prompting a fresh extension of the deadline.

A senior official in the national highways wing said the relocation of transformers and electricity cables close to the Eru Company junction was the principal cause of the delay. The official added that required power shutdowns were not permitted during Class 10 and 12 board examinations and the Assembly election, which prevented timely shifting. With exams and polls concluded, the transformers and cables were relocated on Wednesday and ramp works are now progressing in full swing as contractors press to meet the revised July target.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Indian Railways (IR) will operate more than 300 special trains for the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha and over 100 special trains during the Onam festival in Keralam.
