Sikkim MP Urges Centre To Fast Track Border Road And Seat Reservation Update

Sikkim's lone Lok Sabha member, Indra Hang Subba, urged the Centre on eight July to expedite a strategically important road project along the India?Nepal border and sought an update on the long?pending reservation of Assembly seats for the Limboo and Tamang communities. He presented a detailed representation to the Union Home Secretary, Govind Mohan, in New Delhi outlining several priority concerns affecting the state. The representation emphasised connectivity and political representation as immediate priorities.

The MP pressed for priority for the proposed all?weather road linking Border Outpost Nambu with Border Pillar 34/1 and extending to Border Outpost Hanspokhri, describing it as vital for improving civilian access and strengthening military logistics. He said the route would enhance operational preparedness along the India?Nepal frontier and reduce response times for security forces. The request framed the project as a strategic infrastructure requirement rather than a routine road scheme.

Subba also raised the demand for reservation of Assembly seats for the Limboo and Tamang Scheduled Tribes, which were added to the Scheduled Tribes list in 2003 but have yet to receive legislative reservation in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. He sought information on steps being taken by the Centre to advance the political process, while acknowledging that the matter is essentially political and sits outside the direct administrative remit of the Home Secretary. The submission asked for clarity on timelines and the mechanism being followed.

The memorandum drew attention to difficult working conditions faced by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal deployed in the region and requested extension of the Risk and Hardship (R1H1) Allowance to personnel of the 36th and 72nd Battalions serving in high?altitude and glacial terrain. It reiterated the need for enhanced infrastructure and welfare measures for border personnel and restated the long?standing aspirations of the Limboo and Tamang communities for legislative representation. The MP sought coordinated action by relevant ministries to address both security and socio?political concerns.

"Join industry leaders at RAHSTA Expo, India's premier platform for roads, highways and traffic infrastructure. Register now to explore innovations, network with experts and shape the future of mobility."
