Telangana Electric Conversion Scheme For Autorickshaws

The Telangana government has proposed a Rs two billion (bn) scheme to convert 18,766 petrol and diesel autorickshaws into electric vehicles with a subsidy component for vehicle owners. The scheme was announced as the Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026 and is intended to shape the State's eco-friendly transport policy. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar outlined the plan and its financial assistance parameters.

The programme offers financial assistance of up to Rs one hundred and fifty thousand (Rs zero point one five million, mn) per vehicle, applicable either to retrofitting existing autorickshaws or to subsidising the purchase of new electric units. Retrofitting will require installation of an AIS-123-approved electric kit by empanelled vendors registered under the scheme. Vendors will be empanelled to ensure compliance with technical and safety standards.

Officials noted that the Core Urban Region Economy has 11,254 diesel and 7,512 petrol autorickshaws, which together form the principal target group for conversion. The total allocation for the initiative is Rs two bn and the government expects the funds to cover subsidies and implementation costs. The scheme sets procedures for conversion and procurement to streamline uptake among autorickshaw owners.

The proposal is presented as a measure to reduce vehicular emissions and to lower operating costs for drivers through the adoption of electric powertrains. Administrative oversight and vendor empanelment are to be managed by the transport department to maintain standards and disburse funds. The government indicated that the policy will be part of broader efforts to expand sustainable urban mobility.

The transport department will publish detailed application procedures, eligibility criteria and documentation requirements to guide autorickshaw owners seeking assistance. Disbursement of funds is to follow verification of kits and completed conversions under the oversight of technical teams. Officials indicated that the rollout will involve coordination with local authorities to support uptake and address operational issues.
