Budget 2022: Centre allocates Rs 19,130 cr for metro projects

In the Union Budget of 2022-23, the Centre has allocated Rs 19,130 crore for several metro projects across the country.

On Tuesday the Union Budget was presented by the Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman. An outlay of Rs 19,130 crore is made in the Union Budget for various metro projects across India.

In November 2021, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that a metro network of 723 km was operational across 18 cities, and an additional over 1,000 km of a network was under construction. Additionally, six new proposals were being evaluated.

Delhi Metro officials stated that in recent years, the Ministry of Finance has been providing a Budget for all metro projects across India, and not Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) alone. In Budget 2022-23, the allocation was made for all metro projects in India. For metro projects, the allocation made in the budget last fiscal was Rs 18,978 crore.

The current span of the DMRC network is roughly 392 km along with 286 stations.

Other than that, the metro services are operating in several other cities such as Mumbai, Banglore, Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Kochi.

Furthermore, an outlay of Rs 4,710 crore has also been made in the budget for the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) projects.
