ICF Secures Rs 1,513 Crore Order for 153 Metro Like AC Coaches

Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has secured an order valued at Rs 1,513 crore for 153 metro-like air conditioned coaches for Bengaluru suburban rail, the firm announced. The contract is worth Rs 15,130 million (15,130 mn) on conversion from crore and covers the supply of 153 coaches designed for commuter services. The coaches are described as Metro-like and feature air conditioning to meet urban passenger needs. The order represents one of the larger coach procurements targeted at the region's suburban network in India today.

The Metro-like coaches have been configured for rapid boarding and alighting and include features common to urban rail rolling stock, the release stated. The procurement forms part of wider efforts to upgrade suburban rail capacity and to provide more modern rolling stock for daily commuters. The manufacturing responsibility rests with ICF, which will undertake production and outfitting at its facilities. Supply of such coaches aligns with contemporary design standards for high-frequency suburban services.

The value of the contract reinforces the scale of investment being directed to rail infrastructure in and around Bengaluru and highlights the role of domestic coach manufacturing. The deal will support production schedules and workforce engagement within the factory's operations. The order also signals continued demand for air conditioned, metro-style rolling stock as cities expand commuter networks. Procurement of these coaches contributes to broader plans to enhance the passenger experience on suburban routes.

The numbering and technical specifications of the coaches will be finalised as production progresses, and delivery schedules will be coordinated with the relevant suburban rail authorities. The supply is intended to augment existing services and to offer improved comfort and capacity for daily travellers. ICF's role in executing the contract positions it as a key supplier for urban rail projects. The transaction underscores a sustained focus on modernising suburban rail assets.
