Kolkata Metro To Get 60 New Generation Trains

The Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Kolkata metro will receive 60 new generation trains over the next five years.

The announcement was made in New Delhi on 11 June 2026 and forms part of a national push to modernise urban rail networks.

The minister said the additional rolling stock will allow an expansion of services and higher frequency on busy corridors.

The plan aligns with broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure and improve passenger experience across metropolitan systems.

The new trains will introduce modern amenities, improved reliability and greater energy efficiency compared with older rolling stock.

The ministry said enhancements will focus on passenger comfort, operational performance and reduced downtime through better maintainability.

Attention will also be given to strengthened safety systems and accessibility features to serve a wider range of commuters.

The ministry said reduced lifecycle costs will result from energy saving technologies and standardised components.

The rollout will follow a phased schedule that includes procurement, manufacturing, testing and crew training before the trains enter service.

Maintenance regimes will be upgraded to sustain the new fleet and to ensure high availability for daily operations.

The ministry will coordinate with local authorities to align commissioning with network expansion and depot capacities and to manage integration with existing services.

Work on depots and technical support facilities will proceed in tandem with induction of vehicles.

The expanded fleet will relieve crowding during peak hours and enable higher service frequencies on key corridors, improving connectivity for daily commuters.

Officials said the programme complements other urban mobility initiatives and investment in last mile connectivity across the city.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure and to accelerating delivery of planned projects.

Implementation of the plan is intended to support sustainable urban growth and to provide a more reliable option for city travel.
