Maharashtra Clears Rs 228.62 Billion Airport Metro Link

The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee has approved a 35 km Metro Line 8 project to connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai international airports, with an estimated cost of Rs 228.62 billion. The decision was taken at a meeting held on January 27, 2026, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

The corridor will feature 20 stations, comprising six underground and 14 elevated stations. Land acquisition for the project will cover around 30.7 hectares and is expected to cost Rs 3.88 billion. The high-powered committee formally cleared the Metro Line 8 proposal, which will link Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed that all land acquisition and statutory approvals for the metro project be completed within six months, and that construction should be finished within three years of receiving approvals.

Of the total alignment, 9.25 km will be underground, running from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East. The remaining 24.63 km will be elevated, extending from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2.

The Chief Minister also instructed concerned departments to accelerate work on the extension of the Samruddhi Expressway along the Nagpur–Gondia and Bhandara–Gadchiroli routes, stressing that infrastructure projects should not be allowed to face delays.

In view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela, the committee approved the 66.15 km Nashik city ring road project at an estimated cost of Rs 39.54 billion. In addition, it cleared the upgradation of the 85.76 km Navegaon More–Konsari–Mulchera–Hedri–Surjagad highway in Gadchiroli district into a four-lane cement concrete road to support mineral transportation.
