Southern Railway, in collaboration with Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), has announced plans to construct a direct accessway linking the Radha Nagar subway with Chromepet railway station. Footpaths exist on both sides of the existing Radha Nagar subway, but the subway lies approximately 120 metres from the platform end and has no direct connection to the railway platforms. This gap has raised safety and convenience concerns for commuters approaching the station from Radha Nagar. The Chennai Division of Southern Railway acknowledged these concerns after a local news article on August 15 and has set out to address the technical challenges posed by the distance and alignment between the subway and the station. The proposed accessway is intended to provide safe and convenient entry and exit passageways for passengers approaching from Radha Nagar. Planning documents identify the need for a stable gradient, clear sight lines and uninterrupted pedestrian flow between the subway and platform areas. Preliminary engineering assessments have examined alignment options, structural supports and drainage requirements so that the link can function in diverse weather conditions and during peak commuter hours. Design proposals will incorporate a continuous walking surface, ramps to ensure accessibility for persons with reduced mobility, protective roofing and energy-efficient lighting to enhance security. Signage and wayfinding elements are included to guide passengers to platforms and interchange points. Implementation will require coordination between Southern Railway, CUMTA and local municipal agencies to relocate utilities, manage site access and schedule works to limit disruption to train services. Traffic management and pedestrian diversion plans will be prepared to maintain commuter movement while construction proceeds. Authorities also plan regular communication with local residents to inform them of timelines and mitigation measures. Once completed, the accessway will strengthen last-mile connectivity for the neighbourhood and reduce risks associated with informal crossings to the station. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to enhance pedestrian infrastructure around suburban rail nodes. Southern Railway has presented the proposal as a practical response to identified safety issues and commuter needs.
