Vande Bharat Express Redefines Inter-City Rail Travel in India

As India progresses towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, modern mobility has emerged as a key driver of economic growth, regional integration and social inclusion. In this context, the Vande Bharat Express has become a flagship initiative of Indian Railways, offering faster, safer and more passenger-centric inter-city rail services. India’s first indigenously designed and manufactured semi-high-speed trainset, Vande Bharat represents a major step in the modernisation of the country’s passenger rail network.

Vande Bharat marks a shift from conventional locomotive-hauled trains to self-propelled, integrated train systems designed for higher efficiency, safety and reliability. Conceived to address the growing demand for reduced travel time and improved onboard comfort on medium-distance corridors, the trainsets are positioned as the next generation of premium rail services. Earlier milestones such as the Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express had transformed long-distance and daytime rail travel in their respective eras. Vande Bharat builds on this legacy by aligning with present and future mobility requirements.

The trainsets incorporate several advanced features to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency. Semi-permanent jerk-free couplers, improved suspension systems and ergonomically designed seating contribute to a smoother ride, while regenerative braking systems improve energy efficiency. Safety is strengthened through the provision of the indigenously developed Train Collision Avoidance System, KAVACH, an Automatic Train Protection system certified to Safety Integrity Level-4, which continuously monitors train movement and signal status.

Additional passenger-focused features include centrally controlled automatic plug doors, sealed wider gangways, modern air-conditioning with UV-C lamp-based disinfection, CCTV cameras, emergency alarm systems and GPS-based passenger information displays. Bio-vacuum toilets and Divyangjan-friendly lavatories further improve inclusivity and hygiene standards.

Manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory with around 90 per cent localisation, Vande Bharat trainsets strongly align with the Make in India initiative. In recognition of their energy-efficient design and sustainable manufacturing practices, ICF received the National Energy Conservation Award in 2024, underscoring the broader role of Vande Bharat in shaping the future of Indian rail mobility.
