Mumbai Takes Flight: Drones Grounded for 30 Days Before Holiday Season

As festivities gear up for Christmas and New Year, the Mumbai Police have tightened security measures in the city with a 30-day ban on the flying of drones, remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, and other airborne objects.

The restriction, imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), will remain in effect from December 20, 2023, to January 18, 2024. Exemptions have been granted for aerial surveillance by the police and individuals with specific written permission from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).

Justifying the order, officials cited potential security threats. "Terrorist and anti-national elements could potentially use drones, paragliders, etc., to target VVIPs and endanger the public," a police spokesperson explained.

The move comes amidst heightened security concerns during the upcoming holiday season, when large crowds gather for celebrations across the city.
