Kochi Corporation will overhaul its waste management system after a surge in complaints about inefficient collection and treatment, and the mayor said the authority will review lapses to cut unwanted expenses. The council meeting outlined plans for major changes and a renewed focus on plugging financial leakage. Officials indicated a review of existing programmes and a drive to reduce vehicle and operational charges. The council discussed the defunct Compressed Biogas plant at Brahmapuram, which was set up to treat 150 tonnes (t) of food waste per day but has been idle owing to operational challenges. The corporation currently spends Rs 2,500 to process a tonne of plastic waste at Brahmapuram and is exploring ways to reduce such costs, including auditing vehicle charges. The project proposed by G3 Renewables Private Limited to set up an organic waste treatment plant on three and a half acres at Brahmapuram was judged by officials as potentially more viable than reviving the CBG facility. A councillor urged a special council to analyse the solid waste management plan and outline future programmes, alleging the previous administration spent heavily on initiatives that were not sustained. He referred to the 2023 Brahmapuram fire and said many schemes, including the Thumburmuzhi model bins, fizzled out after launch. The councillor argued that spending on vehicles and plants has not been matched by proper monitoring and that continuity of projects must be ensured. The leader of the opposition said the administration had failed to sustain earlier initiatives and that turning waste into income requires projects implemented without major drawbacks. He urged that cost-cutting measures focus on system improvement rather than outsourcing and that issues at the CBG plant be resolved before entrusting operations to private firms.
