Swachh Survekshan 2021: Indore becomes first water plus certified city

Indore has been declared as India's first water plus city under Swachh Survekshan 2021.

Swachh Survekshan is a yearly survey of hygiene, cleanliness, and sanitation in towns and cities over India launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Pratibha Pal, Municipal Commissioner, Indore, revealed that the city conducted a survey and stopped 7,000 outfalls of greywater that went in drains/rivers and completed every measure to accomplish this task.

She said that 30% of the sewage water of the city was recycled and reused. People use this recycled water in their gardens or some construction sites.

The Municipal Commissioner told the media that seven sewerage processing plants are in the city, and nearly 110 million litres per day (MLD) recycled water from them is used.

As per the Water Plus Protocol guidelines, 147 exclusive types of urinals are constructed in the city. Apart from this, work for cleaning ponds, wells, and water bodies were done as well.

Manish Singh, the District Collector, Indore, also informed that Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) tapped 1,746 public and 5,624 domestic sewer outfalls in 25 small and big nullahs, releasing the Kanh and Saraswati rivers from sewer lines.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, said that Indore's commercial capital established an example for other cities by becoming the first Water plus certified city below the Swachh Survekshan 2021.

Apart from receiving the water plus tag, Indore also achieved the cleanest city in India for the fourth time consequently.
