Andhra Pradesh To Invest Rs 60 bn In Power Infrastructure

The state government has launched power infrastructure works worth Rs 60 bn to address rising electricity demand across Andhra Pradesh, the energy minister told the Assembly in Vijayawada. The announcement followed questions from members during Question Hour and set out a programme of substation and transmission upgrades. Officials indicated the measures aim to strengthen supply and accommodate industrial and agricultural growth.

Authorities have identified the requirement for more than 200 new 33/11 kV substations in areas experiencing heavy load and have begun steps to construct them. The Venugopalapuram substation in Vizianagaram district is under re-tendering and is expected to be completed by March 2027. Works on 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines in Vizianagaram worth Rs 460 mn have been completed and are ready for charging, while related work on the Venugopalapuram project valued at Rs 770 mn is in progress. The programme is intended to provide immediate relief in overloaded localities and to create capacity for future demand.

Representatives raised proposals for underground cabling in Vizianagaram similar to systems used in Visakhapatnam, and officials said such schemes are costly and will be considered based on availability of funds and assessed necessity. A request for a 220 kV substation in the Giddalur constituency was noted and the government said it would undertake feasibility studies before taking steps. Energy department officials will examine technical and financial reports to determine priorities.

The minister attributed the rising demand to increased pace of industrial establishment since the coalition government assumed office and indicated daily consumption is projected to rise from 263 mn units to around 280 mn units. To meet this growth the administration is strengthening the network with 400 kV, 220 kV and 132 kV substations and expanding lines across the state. He added that agricultural electricity connections have also increased and that the primary objective is to ensure uninterrupted supply for all users.
