Ash utilisation: NTPC floats tender for fly-ash sale in Middle East

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd has invited expressions of interest (EoI) for fly-ash sales from the selected ports of the Middle East and other areas.

The company intends to utilise 100% of the fly-ash produced as a by-product at its coal-fired power plants.

NTPC told the media that sustainable ash utilisation is one of the significant areas at NTPC, and the company is making sure of sustainable solutions for it. Bidders are required to file EoIs till July 25.

NTPC informed that the fly-ash produced at NTPC stations is perfect for use in the generation of concrete products, cement, bricks, blocks and tiles.

The company said that it has been providing fly-ash to cement manufacturers, leveraging Indian Railways sprawling network to transport fly ash in an efficient and environment-friendly way.

To promote fly-ash bricks utilisation in building construction, NTPC has established fly ash brick manufacturing Plants at its coal-based plants.

NTPC's fly-ash brick plants manufacture 60 million fly ash bricks on average. These bricks are exclusively being used in the plants and township construction projects as well.

The firm said fly-ash bricks blocks and tiles manufacturing units use around 9% of the total fly ash generated in NTPC stations annually.

Around 15 NTPC stations supplied fly-ash to several road projects, and utilisation of ash crossed over 20 million tonnes during 2020-21.
