Andhra plans large-scale power saving in new housing scheme

Pradesh government eyes big in energy-saving in housing scheme

The Andhra Pradesh government has formulated what is claimed to be India’s biggest energy efficiency project in its housing scheme, Navaratnalu Pedalandariki Illu-Jagananna Colonies.

The state government will supply cost-effective energy efficient appliances (four LED bulbs, two LED tube lights and two energy efficient fans) to each beneficiary of the housing scheme.

The state government is constructing 15.6 lakh houses in phase one of the Jagananna Colonies programme. The appliances are expected to save 734 units of electricity per house per annum. The energy savings would be worth of Rs 3.50 billion for all the 15.6 lakh houses together.

Special chief secretary (housing), Ajay Jain, said that for the first time in India, the Andhra government has taken an initiative to facilitate best quality energy efficient appliances at highly cost-effective prices. “Apart from the savings on the energy and electricity bills, this would improve the quality of life of the occupants of these 15.6 lakh houses,” he said Jain.

The state housing department has proposed to take up the procurement of energy efficient appliances with the support of Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation (APSEEDCO) through Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture company of four Central public sector undertakings.
