Delhi Mayor Says Okhla And Bhalswa Landfills On Track For December

Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi met Union home minister Amit Shah to brief him on progress towards clearing the city’s major landfill sites and said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is on track to clear the Okhla and Bhalswa sites by December this year. The meeting covered biomining operations, waste processing and timelines for remediation.

Wahi outlined targets for the Ghazipur landfill, which the civic body now aims to fully remediate by December 2027, and submitted a progress report on biomining and waste processing at the city’s three landfill sites. He also discussed broader solid waste management and cleanliness initiatives with the Union home minister, according to a statement from the Mayor's Office.

The Mayor's Office said around 30 acres of the 62-acre Okhla landfill have been reclaimed through biomining and waste processing. About eight million (mn) metric tonnes (t) of legacy waste have been scientifically processed, while processing of nearly one point five mn t of fresh waste is under way. The report said the pace of biomining had accelerated at Okhla as reclamation and processing technologies were scaled up.

At the Bhalswa landfill, around 25 acres of the 70-acre site have been reclaimed so far and the civic body is aiming to eliminate the dumpsite by December 2026. Wahi acknowledged technical and operational challenges at the Ghazipur site caused by the disposal of inert material, and officials said the National Thermal Power Corporation has begun lifting around four mn t of inert material for utilisation.

The MCD plans a tree plantation drive on more than 20 acres of reclaimed land at Okhla once biomining is complete, with the objective of converting former dumps into green zones. Officials said the initiative is intended to combine remediation with environmental conservation and to close legacy waste chapters at the three sites within the stated timelines.
