On Tuesday, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) told the media that the project proposals for more than 60,000 homes were authorised for development under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier this month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Budget presentation declared an allocation of Rs 48,000 crore to develop eight million homes. The government had earlier declared that all Indians would be rendered ‘pucca’ homes by 2024.

The total number of approved homes under PMAY(U) is currently 114.04 lakh, of which about 93.25 lakh have been grounded for construction and approximately 54.78 lakh have been achieved and delivered to the beneficiaries.

The government further said that the total investment under the mission stands at Rs 7.52 lakh crore, with central assistance of Rs 1.87 lakh crore. So far, Central Assistance amounting to Rs 1.21 lakh cr has already been released.

Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, during the 58th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), discussed the problems about grounding and construction of houses in various states under different verticals of PMAY(U), according to the Ministry statement.

He reviewed the speed of achievement of homes in the states and directed the officials to facilitate the process and meanwhile furthermore evaluate the beneficiary allotment and completion of Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) projects in their respective areas.
