BMC kicks off six series consultation on climate action plan

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the six-part public consultation on the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP).

On 28 August, Aaditya Thackeray, the Ministry of Environment, launched a website for MCAP. By using the website, the residents of Mumbai can give feedback and suggestions on the first MCAP. It will provide information from which people can study climatic changes, action plans of other cities, and steps needed to fight for the same.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, BMC is arranging video conferencing as webinars to discuss the topic with the locals and residents.

BMC will begin the discussion on waste management from 2 September. For a few days, BMC will host online consultations in the sectors of energy efficiency, sustainability, mobility, air quality, biodiversity, urban greening, urban flood management, and water resources management.

People can submit their suggestions and recommendations online till 20 September.

MCAP is getting prepared with help from the World Resources Institute of India. The civic body may launch MCAP by November, ahead of the United Nations (UN) climate change conference 2021.

The initiative of the climate action plan was taken up in Mumbai's commitment to the C40 Cities, climate leadership group, of which MCAP became a member in December 2020.

Among the 97 cities across the world, this one is working to develop and implement climate action plans by a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
