Delhi Renames Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation As IVPN

The Delhi government has renamed the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation as the Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN) and unveiled a heritage revival plan for Old Delhi. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the IVPN was chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and attended by the Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood and the managing director Sandeep Kumar. The corporation will pursue conservation and redevelopment to restore the area's historic and architectural identity while upgrading civic amenities.

The AGM prioritised redevelopment of Chandni Chowk and directed that the market's design reflect its historical character while accommodating heavy daily footfall. The chief minister instructed officials to develop modern public toilet blocks and strengthen civic services to handle hundreds of thousands of daily visitors. Historians and heritage experts will be involved to ensure architectural authenticity.

Review of the Town Hall redevelopment included a directive to create a major entry and exit from the Chandni Chowk side so the building can function as a heritage and tourism centre. The meeting stressed safeguarding the interests of local traders and shopkeepers to balance conservation with commercial activity. A control room will be set up in the market to provide information and assistance to visitors.

Officials were asked to prepare blueprints for the Hanuman Temple at Yamuna Bazaar and for the Jama Masjid area and the road in front of the Old Delhi Railway Station. Emphasis was placed on organised parking, traffic management and waste systems to improve access and the environment. The IVPN will pursue an integrated approach combining conservation, tourism promotion, economic activity and civic amenities.

The chief minister said Delhi's historical heritage is an invaluable legacy for future generations and that development must preserve historical identity and architectural beauty while improving facilities for residents and traders. Officials noted Old Delhi covers about seven square kilometres, is over 350 years old and includes one World Heritage Site, 10 nationally protected monuments, 10 state-protected monuments and over 700 locally protected heritage sites. The planned work is expected to reinforce Old Delhi's historic identity and boost trade and tourism.
