EIM Signs 500 MWh Battery Deal With CATL for Heavy Duty EVs

Energy In Motion (EIM) has signed an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., (CATL) to source 500 MWh of lithium iron phosphate cells and battery pack kits for its electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The supply includes CATL’s upgraded CB7T0 cell model and the L324D06 battery pack platform. EIM said the new cell and pack platform offers higher cycle life and greater volumetric energy density than the CB230 cells it previously used.

The packs will be configured into 400.6 kWh battery systems for integration into EIM’s e-tractor 4x2 Ashwa series. These systems will be fitted into swappable battery boxes customised for India’s high ambient temperature operating conditions. Energy In Motion Ltd is building an electric heavy commercial vehicle ecosystem that includes megawatt-scale charging and swapping stations across the country. Its first electric heavy vehicle, the Ashwa 55 tonne (55 t) e-tractor, was launched on August 1, 2025.

EIM has already commissioned six heavy-duty swap stations in the Delhi-NCR region and at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) area, providing a combined swap capacity of 840 battery swaps per day. The company is targeting 40 operational heavy commercial vehicle swap cum charging stations by the end of March, 2027. The modular battery approach will allow rapid turnaround times for long haul freight operators and is designed to reduce roadside dwell time for drivers.

CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, held a 39.2 per cent share of the global power battery market in 2025. The supply agreement is intended to scale EIM’s deployment of swappable battery systems for heavy commercial vehicles and to support its plans for networked charging infrastructure. EIM will integrate the supplied cells and packs into its vehicle and station designs while continuing roll out of its swap station network.
