MHI Compressor Wins Steam Turbine Order for Baton Rouge Plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corporation (MCO-I), a specialist in compressors, steam turbines and related auxiliaries, has secured a contract from ExxonMobil to supply a footprint replacement steam turbine for the company’s olefins plant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The project will be jointly executed by teams from MCO-I and its parent firm, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO), covering manufacturing, testing, commissioning and installation.

A notable aspect of the project is the use of virtual assembly throughout both the manufacturing and installation phases. This technique involves creating a highly accurate digital model of key components prior to shipment. By pre-assembling parts in a virtual environment, engineers can identify and resolve potential alignment or fit issues ahead of time, helping ensure a smooth turnaround and uninterrupted operations at the plant.

Michael McCurry, Manager of New Unit Business Sales at MCO-I, said the award underscores the strong and long-standing relationship between the two companies. He noted that virtual assembly enables digital test-fitting of components manufactured in Japan and the United States, reducing the likelihood of delays during installation at Baton Rouge.

McCurry added that the turbine will play a central role in the operation of ExxonMobil’s olefins facility and is expected to remain in service for at least three decades. Delivery of the unit is planned for early 2027.
