Semiconductor Plant In Assam To Begin Production This Year

The union electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the semiconductor assembly and test plant at Jagiroad in Assam is expected to commence production within this financial year following discussions with the state chief minister. He indicated that the project has progressed to a stage where operational readiness is being prioritised and that training infrastructure is being developed alongside manufacturing capacity. The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) has been described as shaping well to provide skills required for semiconductor manufacturing technologies.

The facility, operated by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd, is planned with an investment of Rs 270 billion (bn) and is expected to produce up to 48 million (mn) semiconductor chips per day using advanced packaging technologies such as flip-chip and Integrated System in Package. The investment supports the national effort to build a self-sufficient semiconductor ecosystem. Project planners have identified automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications and consumer electronics as primary demand sectors for the output.

The state chief minister described the meeting as constructive and noted collaboration on expanding rail infrastructure, including ongoing 1,300+ km of track expansion and more than 50 Amrit Bharat stations, which are expected to improve logistics for the plant and surrounding industries. Officials indicated that rail upgrades and associated connectivity measures will form part of the broader industrial support framework to facilitate supply chains and workforce mobility. Complementary investments in local infrastructure aim to integrate the manufacturing hub with regional transport networks.

Industry analysts and government officials have signalled that the Jagiroad site is positioned to become a significant manufacturing centre within the national semiconductor value chain, with design and packaging capabilities intended to serve domestic and export markets. The project timeline remains subject to completion of final commissioning, regulatory clearances and supply chain stabilisation, but stakeholders continue to target operational milestones within the current financial year. Continued focus on skills development, infrastructure and technology adoption has been presented as central to achieving long term sustainability for the facility.
