Toyota To Build New Vehicle Manufacturing Plant In India

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced plans to build a new vehicle manufacturing plant in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra, India, with production slated to begin in the first half of 2029. The company said the facility is intended to strengthen its long-term global competitiveness and to support local communities. The announcement stated that the plant will bolster Toyota's business foundation in the Indian market.

The new plant will be positioned to supply vehicles to customers in India and to neighbouring regions, and it is expected to produce up to 100,000 vehicles per year at the start of production. The operation will employ approximately 2,800 people and will cover core processes including stamping, welding, painting and assembly. A new sport utility vehicle will be manufactured at the site.

TKM indicated that the facility has been planned to enable a flexible response to future demand growth and market changes, and to deliver products in a timely manner that customers choose. The company said it will continue to work with stakeholders and local communities to contribute to the development of India's automotive industry and society. The project is presented as part of a longer-term strategy to secure production resilience in India and surrounding markets.

The release also set out an overview of TKM's existing operations, noting equity participation of 89 per cent by Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan) and 11 per cent by Kirloskar Systems Limited. The company reported a permanent workforce of 6,466, a land area of approximately 432 acres (approximately 1,700,000 m2) and a building area of 74,000 m2. TKM stated that its total installed production capacity is up to 342,000 units, and that its first plant was established in October 1997 with production starting in December 1999. The second plant began production in December 2010 and currently manufactures several models including hybrid and pickup variants.
