Navi Mumbai Gears Up for Airport With Infra, Safety Steps

As the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) nears completion, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) are stepping up infrastructure, transport and safety measures to ensure readiness.

NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde said that while the airport is located outside NMMC limits, the city will act as its “service backbone.” The corporation is deploying more than 50 electric buses to connect the airport with the city until the Metro system becomes operational. It is also supplying treated water for non-potable uses, upgrading directional signage, and improving major access routes such as the Thane-Belapur Road, Palm Beach Road and other arterial corridors.

Connectivity improvements will link South Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Central Mumbai and Eastern suburbs through NMMC roads, and North Mumbai, Thane and Mira-Bhayandar via the upgraded Thane-Belapur Road until the multimodal corridor is ready in four to five years.

NMMC is aligning its long-term plans with the airport’s development, focusing on road widening, new water networks, redevelopment with higher Floor Space Index (FSI), and hospitality infrastructure to support growth in real estate and services.

PMC is working on road upgrades, streetlighting and signage, while also addressing flight safety by monitoring open meat and fish markets to reduce bird strike risks.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has sanctioned 10 MVA of power for construction at NMIA, with capacity to supply up to 20 MVA once operations commence. The utility has pledged to meet future demand, highlighting the airport’s role in driving economic growth in Navi Mumbai and Maharashtra.
